As a grown-up single 28+ seeking your special someone - what if someone doesn’t match all your must-haves. Where do you start compromising?

The above sentence was asked in our singles community—this is how we responded.

Must-haves are your non-negotiables—the values, traits, and qualities you desire in a partner. Ideally, these should be limited to no more than 7 items. They can range from emotional intelligence, shared life goals, and a growth mindset to financial stability and beyond.

In relationships among grown-up singles aged 28 and beyond, especially when both individuals have been financially independent and living life on their own terms for 5-7 years or more, adjustments and compromises are inevitable. The focus naturally shifts to finding a balance between honoring individual experiences and independence to create a harmonious and fulfilling shared life.

Having a clear sense of your must-haves also helps you understand where you can adjust and where you need to stand firm. It’s not about settling but rather aligning values and expectations to build a relationship that feels enriching and empowering, not restrictive.
